See above for more information

The Columbia College Club of Mid Atlantic cordially invites ALL alumni of Columbia University to an excursion to the Virginia Wine Country. We will be visiting three premium wineries:

Prince Michel - We will visit their wine museum, take a tour of the winery and taste the wines. Prince Michel is the largest winery in the state, producing 38,000 cases annually. It is owned by Jean Leducq, a French businessman, who also now owns Rapidan River Winery as well as 20 acres in the Napa Valley. Prince Michel produces wines in a French style, while Rapidan River (which was started by a German surgeon) produces wine in a Germanic style.

Horton Vineyards - We will eat our box lunches here (see choices below) and have a brief tour and taste the goods. The multi-talented Dennis Horton designed the impressive edifice here and has also been extremely influential in Virginia viticulture by proving that Viognier and other Rhone grape varieties can thrive in Virginia. Dennis has also broken the mold with his stunning success with a native Virginia grape (the Norton) as well as with Portuguese varieties.

Barboursville - This historic site is named for James Barbour and the ruins of the James Barbour mansion designed by Thomas Jefferson. (James Barbour was Virginia Governor and Senator who also served as Secretary of War and Ambassador to Great Britain under President John Quincy Adams.) In more recent times, Barboursville has made its name with its quality wines produced from a wide range of grapes including the Italian Sangiovese and Pinot Grigio.

We look forward to seeing you on this grand tour of Virginia Wine Country!
