In addition, Danielle Davy (BC '01), who has been featured in many local plays in the DC area, will be acting in her first play at the Shakespeare Theater. The first of Oscar Wilde's brilliant social comedies, Lady Windermere's Fan combines shrewd satire of Victorian high society with the witty and intelligent dialogue that distinguishes Wilde as one of the greatest comedic writers of all time. Suspecting her husband of infidelity with a woman of "ill repute," Lady Windermere decides to strike back at him through her own unfaithfulness. An unlikely rescuer prevents her from this deed and its damage to her reputation, revealing the heart of the misunderstanding as well as the workings of the Victorian upper class. Acclaimed actress Dixie Carter, whose previous performance in A Woman of No Importance at The Shakespeare Theatre was described as "classy, quietly heroic" (The Washington Post), unites with returning director Keith Baxter, whose production of The Rivals was proclaimed as "irrepressibly funny!" (Chicago Tribune).

PLACE:  Cosmos Club , 2121 Massachusetts Ave NW (202-387-7783)

Ambassador Richard Gardner, professor of law and international organization at Columbia Law School, professor at Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs and Of Counsel to Morgan Lewis & Bockius, a global law firm, will discuss current US foreign policy challenges and his new book, Mission Italy: On the Front Lines of the Cold War, which draws on hitherto classified material to tell the story of his service as US Ambassador to Italy from 1977-1981. This luncheon is sponsored by the Columbia Law School and SIPA.

This turbulent period was marked by the kidnapping and murder of Aldo Moro by the Red Brigades, the failed attempt of the Communist Party to take power, and Italy’s historic decision to deploy US cruise missiles, which Mikhail Gorbachev later identified as a key factor in his decision to shift Soviet foreign policy from military confrontation to disarmament and peaceful cooperation based on the free choice of political systems.

Gardner served as U.S. ambassador to Spain (1993-1997) and as U.S. ambassador to Italy (1977-1981). He also served as a member of President Clinton's Advisory Committee on Trade Policy and Negotiations. In 1999, he was a member of the U.S. Delegation to the Ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organization in Seattle.  During his tenure as a U.S. representative, Ambassador Gardner worked on a wide range of issues, particularly those related to U.N. peacekeeping, U.N. financial and management reform and the Middle East. He has addressed the U.N. General Assembly on several occasions.

Event:  Write & Speak Like the News: Journalism Skills to Sharpen Your
Business Communication, seminar led by Hank Wallace, Columbia Law School '70

DATE:  Tuesday, November 1, 2005
TIME:   7:00 pm to 9:00 pm
PLACE:  National Press Club, 529 14th St., NW (2 blocks southwest of Metro Center)

MORE INFO: Contact hankwallace@wsln.com.
RSVP: Please RSVP Georgina Shepard at gcs2002@columbia.edu by October 25th if you would like to attend this event. The seminar is free to Columbia University alumni only as long as space remains and we receive your RSVP.  We expect this popular event to fill up fast, so sign up soon.

Seminar highlights:  To inform from the start in your next email or briefing, lead with the future (rather than with background).  Master technical and crisis communication.  Delete "wimp words."  Inflect with authority.  More -- including tips and a review of Hank's State Department seminar for U.S. ambassadors: http://WSLN.com.

All speaking in this seminar is voluntary, as is this bureaucratese contest:  To give our seminar a running start, rewrite the following headline in the most confusing, stuffy manner you can muster: "Baton Rouge airport ramping up to fill void in New Orleans" (New Orleans Times-Picayune, Aug. 31, 2005, Web edition).

(Hint:  For that bureaucratic ambiance, lead with background.  Example:"Announcement
"Status of Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, "Hurricane Katrina has grounded all commercial flights since Aug. 28.  However, airlines are adding many flights at Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport.")

Have fun pursuing a serious skill.  This contest will take bureaucratese to a satirical extreme, giving us insights, by contrast, on how to inform from the start. Email your entry -- again, this contest is optional -- by Tuesday, October 25 to hankwallace@WSLN.com.  Subject line: CUCDC bureaucratese contest. Include your name and university affiliation, both of which Hank may cite in our seminar unless you ask otherwise.

How are the contentions in the region reflected in American political debates?

This discussion will address these questions with a special focus on university life, asking how debates about both the regional conflicts and American interests have been reflected on American campuses and what roles professors do--and should--play in public debates, scholarly research and classroom instruction about the region and its conflicts.
